Modem settings

Useful information upon connection to analog (six-digit) Automated Phone Station
List of recommended initializing lines for modems

When connecting new modem to computer the user shall work on the following algorithm:

1. Device connection (the computer shall be switched on):
1.1 When connecting internal modem it is necessary to insert the modem tightly to the plug of appropriate type in the motherboard. From the outer side connect phone cable to “Line” plug located in the modem.
1.2 When connecting external modem - Connect with special cable (usually distributed together with modem) COM- or USB-port of the computer with correspondent plug on the modem. Connect power unit to modem. Switch Power button.

2. Modem installation
Switch on the computer. Several situations can arise on loading operation system:
2.1 Operation system (especially if it is Windows XP) will detect the modem device itself and that will be reflected on the Control Board in “Phone and Modem” section.
2.2 When loading operation system (Windows 95, 98, ME) you will need the installation disk with modem drivers. Information carrier (CD-disk, floppy disk) with drivers of the concrete equipment model is usually distributed in the package together with the modem. In case of modem drivers request it is necessary to point the exact place on the CD-disk (floppy disk) where the drivers are located and press Enter. After full loading of the operation system make sure the modem is installed correctly: open Control Panel, Modems section.

3. Connection settings

  • Notes:

    For convenience of connection it’s worth to put Sarkor connection to the Desktop;

    If you use analog phone line and Windows XP operation system, than in the field “phone number” in front of the phone number you should type Latin letter «P».

    Connection to analog (six-digit) Automated Phone Station.

    Upon connection to the Internet the important factor of qualitative transfer is presence of clear phone line -line working on the principle of digital data transfer on condition of cable physical integrity what provides clearness of data transfer - without drop-in, unwanted sounds and other noise unfortunately often arising on analog lines due to exploitation of old, certainly damaged cables and presence of blocking units.
    When the connection is set on the analog Automated Phone Station, presence of noise often leads to connection interrupting and sometimes it is observed that “modem is in retrain”, the same process of logging - “conversation” of the clients modem and provider’s modem pool, that can be observed upon setting the connection only with difference that all this happens when the connection is already set. Visually this process looks as absence of loading that naturally raises user’s negative emotions.
    Advices to users of analog phone lines ( all six-digit numbers and some seven-digit ones refer to them):
    1. The first advice to users of analog Automated Phone Stations to change it to digital phone station;
    2. Use external modem: any mark famous for its quality - US Robotics, Zyxel. Especially unstable connection is observed when the internal modem and analog automated Phone Stations are used;
    3. For facilitation of connection process and further work in the Network it is recommended:

    • Use initialization line set in modem properties - such that deliberately will not allow the modem connecting on V.90 standard acceptable when working on digital Automated Phone stations and hindering connection process on analog lines. What line shall be set - it depends on the user’s modem model. How to set the initialization line - open Modem Properties (in Windows XP -«Additional connection parameters» - «Additional initialization line », â Windows 95, 98, ME -«Connection» - «Additional…» - «Initialization line»). List of initialization lines for concrete modem models you can find below;

    • Use of commas and character letters in dialing number (example - “PW1,127000”). P letter means impulse dialing (for example in Windows XP operation system when working on the analog Automated Phone Station this letter is absolutely necessary) W - waiting answer - modem will not dial the number until their is no signal in the line “Free line”. Commas mean second interval when dialing the number (often on Automated Phone stations of low quality it is necessary to wait for the click after any digit when dialing the number);

    • Variation of commas can be different after any digit;

    • Increasing of call waiting time. As a rule in Windows operation system there is waiting time of 60 seconds, that is insufficient upon modem “conversation”, “calling” from analog Automated Phone Station, this number shall be increased up to 180 seconds. Actions on increasing call waiting time shall be set in modem Properties as well;

    • Use of dial programs (Dialers) - first of all to spare your nerves. E-Dialer, NetLaunch are samples of the checked programs. On the analog lines it is not always possible to call from the first time, but Dialers have possibility to dial automatically on the script set by the user. Thus when dialing to modem pool the user is not constantly dealing with dialing process but is just waiting when from n-trial this will be done by the special program. Detailed description of these programs and references for their loading you can find on our site www.sarkor.com in “To Clients” section” - “Programs that we recommend”
